Justice Grants Programs and Initiatives

The Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG) is the state administering agency for grant programs administered by the US Department of Justice.  OVSJG manages a portfolio of grants with annual funding levels that vary according to availability of funds allocated to states and programs. This portfolio includes a number of federal formula grants and local grant funds.  These grants are primarily awarded for justice system improvement projects and victim services programs.

Each year, OVSJG makes awards to nonprofit and government organizations to fund a wide variety of justice grants initiatives.  Funding is typically awarded for the grant year beginning October 1 and ending September 30, although unsolicited proposals are accepted and reviewed throughout the year. Requests for Applications of these programs are typically issued in April.

Title II - Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention
The Title II Formula Grant Program administered by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is focused on improving juvenile justice systems by increasing the availability and types of prevention and intervention programs and juvenile justice system improvements. These funds grant efforts to plan, establish, operate, coordinate, and evaluate projects for the development of more effective education, training, research, prevention, diversion, treatment, and rehabilitation programs in the area of juvenile delinquency and programs to improve the juvenile justice system.

The Byrne Aware program emphasizes legislative foundations of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act and funding levels provided, the level of interagency cooperation the program generated, the extent to which resources were more rationally used, the potential for permanent adoption of innovations stimulated by the program, and the extent to which monitoring and evaluation systems satisfactorily assessed the program and its projects. OVSJG will fund several projects focused on Women’s Reentry. The goal of these initiatives is to enhance the quality of life for women involved in the criminal justice system, their families, and the community.

Show Up, Stand Out (SUSO) is designed to reduce the rate of unexcused absences by eliminating barriers to school attendance. The SUSO program targets students with five to nine unexcused absences in order to address any practical, behavioral, financial and health challenges prior to Child and Family Services Agency and/or court involvement. Each participating school closely partners with a community-based organization with the capacity to provide fast-tracked wraparound services that quickly stabilizes the family in order to prevent any further absenteeism.
