Centering Racial Equity

Last Date:

Location:
5 Thomas Circle NW
Details:

Please join the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence for an advanced training on centering racial equity in our work as domestic violence advocates and service providers. This event will discuss why the inclusion of a racial equity framework is critical to anti-violence work, and will provide advocates with tools for engaging in racial equity practices. The 3-hour workshop will be led by Karma Cottman, and is designed for advocates and service providers working to empower survivors and their families in DC.

About our facilitator:

Karma Cottman has been the Executive Director of DCCADV since 2010 and ED and co-founder of Ujima since 2015. Prior to DCCADV, Ms. Cottman worked as the Vice President of Policy and Emerging Issues at NNEDV where she directed the agency’s policy agenda and supervised NNEDV's state coalition and housing technical assistance projects. She worked closely with national policy partners to strengthen federal legislation to effectively respond to the needs of all domestic violence survivors. In her capacity as the Co-Director of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s Rural Diversity Initiative, she assisted with the development of a community assessment tool used to identify service gaps in numerous local Florida communities. Ms. Cottman continues to provide national leadership ensuring that violence against women of color is addressed in legislation, specifically through the Violence Against Women Act and the Family Violence Prevention Services Act. She currently serves on The Board of the National Teen Dating Violence Hotline, Washington DC Fatality Review Board, and the Policy Partnership for Communities of Color.
