October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mayor Bowser’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation – October 2021

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), individuals and organizations raise awareness and unite to prevent and end domestic violence in the District.

This October, these efforts are even more important given reports on the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on domestic violence. COVID-19 has caused major economic devastation, disconnected many from community resources and support systems, and created widespread uncertainty and panic.

Please visit the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence DVAM calendar of events for an updated list of virtual, in-person and hybrid events that take place during the month. Residents are also encouraged to participate in Purple Thursday on October 21 by wearing purple.

If you or a loved one are a victim/survivor of domestic violence and need assistance or resources, please contact the DC Victim Hotline.
