June 15, 2018 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15, 2018 is the 11th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Additionally, WEAAD supports the United Nations International Plan of Action acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants provides financial and technical support to local programs that work with victims/survivors of elder abuse. If you are a victim of elder abuse seeking services, please contact the DC Victim Hotline via call/text at 1-844-4HELPDC or by chat at www.dcvictim.org.
