Strengthening Families Using a Racial Equity Lens

Data shows that families of color are disproportionately represented in the foster care system, as well as, experience poorer outcomes. This presentation will discuss the issues illumined by the data, and provide some historical context associated with child welfare and the formulation of the our child welfare policies and procedures. Additionally, this training will create an opportunity for each participant to become aware of their own philosophical position on child and family wellbeing and will learn strategies for advancing equity by shifting individual and organizational mindset.

Child Abuse & Coercive Control: "But he doesn't abuse the children"

This workshop explores how abusers harm children to control and punish their partners and ex-partners. The various ways this dynamic plays out, including direct physical, sexual, and emotional abuse of the children, economic abuse, “procedural abuse” involving the courts and/or child protection systems, and obligating the spousal victim to harm the children will be explored.

Stewards of Children® training was developed by Darkness to Light and serves as a foundation of Safe Shores’ Prevention and Outreach program. This training teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for individuals concerned about the safety of children as well as organizations that serve youth. Training includes discussion about critical issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues in our communities through a video sharing the voices of survivors and experts in the field.
